The Code is a set of sustainable design principles covering performance in 9 key areas: Energy & CO2 emissions, Water, Materials, Surface Water Run-off, Waste, Pollution, Health & Wellbeing, Management and Ecology.
The Code uses a rating system of one to six stars, involving a Design Stage Report and a Post Construction Report providing a final Code certificate.
Formal assessment of dwellings can only be carried out by suitably qualified, licensed and registered Code Assessors.
The issuing of a Code certificate will be mandatory for all new houses in England from May 2008. Developers wishing to lead the field in sustainable development will want to have their developments assessed under the Code to achieve as high a rating as possible.
